Allred Announces $8.7 million grant from American Rescue Plan for Dallas College to Grow Biotech Workforce Training

August 3, 2022

DALLAS – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), today announced that an $8.7 million grant was awarded to Dallas College to provide workforce training to North Texans in the field of biotechnology. The grant was awarded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and the funding was made possible by the American Rescue Plan, which Allred helped pass.

“The American Rescue Plan continues to deliver for North Texas, this time by strengthening Dallas College’s work to help North Texans get good jobs,” said Allred. “North Texas can lead the world in biotechnology, and this grant will help us build the workforce to do just that.”

“Dallas College is proud to take the lead role in this new federally funded initiative to help move underemployed and unrepresented populations into living wage jobs and grow the region’s biotech workforce,” said Dallas College Chancellor Justin Lonon. “The years of behind-the-scenes work that went into aligning the different partners and interests needed to secure this level of federal investment, from industry to our peers in higher ed, is something that deserves special recognition for the surrounding diverse communities we serve.”

Dallas College will partner with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, Children’s Health Medical Center, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and other leading employers to expand the number of skilled workers in clinical labs, bioinformatics and biomanufacturing.
