Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) today announced that his guest for the State of the Union will be Garland resident, Shane Thompson. Thompson recently attended Allred’s roundtable on health care where she shared her story regarding the high cost of insulin and health insurance. The State of the Union will be on Tuesday, February 4 at 8:00 PM CST.

“I am honored to have Shane as my guest at the State of the Union this year,” said Allred. “Shane has been brave enough to speak out and share her story regarding how the high price of insulin and health insurance is impacting her. This story is all too common and shared by many North Texans who struggle to afford the prescriptions they need to live. With the House acting last year to pass the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, it is more important than ever that we finish the job and deliver real relief for North Texans.”

You can watch Thompson share her story here.

Allred has made this issue a priority in this Congress. He is a cosponsor of the Insulin Price Reduction Act and was a leader in pushing to pass the Lower Drug Costs Now Act

According to a report Allred released with the House Committee on Ways and Means, 2.3 million Texans live with diabetes and the price of insulin has increased 197% over the past decade. If the Lower Drug Costs Now Act became law, Texas residents could spend 3.5 times less on insulin. The bill could lower the average total cost of the insulin NovoLOG Flexpen by 76% from about $19,800 to $4,800 per year. Under the bill, some commonly used insulins could cost as little as $400 per year.
