Allred Statement After Zelensky Address to Congress

March 16, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s virtual address to Congress.

“America stands with Ukraine in its fight for peace and it was an honor to hear from President Zelensky directly today in Congress.

“A murderous dictator has launched an unprovoked and unjustified attack on a sovereign democratic neighbor and in the process killed hundreds of civilians – including pregnant women and children. This is a tragedy and has been met with a global response led by President Biden.”

“Russia is more isolated than ever, and in a short time, the aggressive sanctions levied on Putin and Russia have undone more than 30 years of Russian efforts to integrate into global markets. The economic pain is real and punishing for Putin and his oligarch friends.

“Ukrainians want the same thing Americans want. The right to work hard, the right to self-determination and the right to choose their own destiny. The fight for democracy has never been more important and we must stand up to anti-democratic autocrats.

“The U.S. Congress, working hand in hand with the Biden Administration, will ensure that we do all we can to get the Ukrainians everything they need to defend themselves, alleviate the humanitarian suffering, punish Putin with sanctions, and continue working with our allies to find a diplomatic solution.”
