Allred Statement Marking Two Years Since the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol

January 6, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) released the following statement marking two years since the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“On January 6, I texted my wife from the House floor ‘whatever happens I love you.’ And two years later, it’s clear that we came closer to losing our democracy that day than most Americans realize.

“The work of the Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack was so important to document what happened, who was responsible and to make sure this never happens again. I commend the work of Chairman Bennie Thompson and Vice-Chair Liz Cheney.

“The Committee’s final report makes it clear that former President Trump, and a handful of loyalists, are to blame for what happened that day and the dangerous election disinformation and denialism we still see now. There must be accountability.

“The successful passage of the Electoral Count Reform Act last year is a good step, and proof that we can take bipartisan action to protect our democracy. We must all remain committed to building on that work, and ensuring that something like January 6 never happens again.”
