Allred Statement on the Release of Memphis Police Department’s Body Cam Footage in Tyre Nichols’s Murder
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) today released the following statement after the footage of Tyre Nichols’s murder by Memphis Police Department Officers was released publicly.
“Like so many, I am shocked and appalled by the footage released today of Tyre Nichols’s death at the hands of five now former Memphis Police Officers. Mr. Nichols’s family, loved ones and his entire community will be in my prayers. Mr. Nichols was a son, a father, and a friend to many. His death and his treatment by these officers should shock every American.
“Though I am encouraged by the speed with which the Memphis Police moved to fire these officers and the Shelby County District Attorney’s decision to charge them with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping, and official misconduct and oppression – I know that much more must be done.
“This includes ensuring our communities can trust the police who serve them while training and empowering the many dedicated officers who every day serve their communities with bravery and compassion.
“My colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus have worked tirelessly to craft a police reform bill, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, that will both ensure our communities remain safe and give police the tools and training they need to truly live up to their mission to protect and serve all Americans.
“It is time negotiations begin again so we can swiftly pass a measure to save lives and send it to the President’s desk.”
