Allred Statement on Senate Moving Forward on Enshrining Marriage Equality into Federal Law

November 16, 2022

Washington, D.C. –  Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), a member of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus, released the following statement after a bipartisan majority of U.S. Senators voted to move forward with the Respect for Marriage Act which would enshrine marriage equality into law.

“After the radical decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, it is more important than ever that Congress acts, and we enshrine marriage equality into law.

“Families need the stability and peace of mind that federal protection of marriage brings, because no matter who you are or where you live, everyone should be able to marry who they love.

“It is extremely disappointing that our two U.S. Senators in Texas voted against this measure. But rest assured, I will always fight for our LGBTQ neighbors and their families and work to ensure they can live their lives free from discrimination.

“I look forward to once again voting for this bipartisan measure in the House, and sending it to President Biden’s desk for his signature.”

Allred voted for the House version of the Respect for Marriage Act earlier this year. You can watch Allred’s floor speech on the legislation here.
