Allred Votes in Favor of Legislation to Strengthen Background Checks

February 27, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), released the following statement after voting in favor of instant universal background checks, H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019. Allred is a co-sponsor of the bill which the House passed with bipartisan support.

"As a new father, it is clearer than ever to me that keeping families and North Texas neighborhoods safe is paramount," said Allred. "This bill and the bill that closes the Charleston loophole are both common sense measures that protect the second amendment while taking action to prevent gun violence and help ensure that domestic abusers and other dangerous criminals cannot obtain a firearm. I am glad that after years of inaction, there is finally progress on gun safety with this new Congress."

Tomorrow, the House will also consider legislation that closes the "Charleston loophole," which allowed a shooter to obtain a gun which was used to kill nine churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina.
