At Allred’s Request, $3.2 Million for Research to Improve Tornado Warnings in Appropriations Bill

July 17, 2020

Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32), today announced that at his urging, the House Appropriations Committee has included $3.2 million in funding for the new Tornado Warning Improvement and Extension Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The measure is included in the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2021 and after passing the committee, now awaits action for a vote in the full House.

"As North Texans well know, even a few seconds can make a huge difference in how we prepare for the impact of a storm and save lives," said Allred. "As severe weather worsens and with more violent storms every year, these funds will allow researchers and experts at NOAA to improve the accuracy and timeliness of tornado forecasts and warnings. I thank my colleagues for including this funding, and I know there is broad bipartisan agreement for common-sense research like this."

Allred has fought hard in Congress to ensure that North Texas gets the disaster relief money it is owed from the October 20 storms last year. The Administration denied the bipartisan appeal, and Allred has committed to doing everything he can to help North Texans rebuild.
